Michigan Technological University

Michigan Technological University is an American public university having its foundation going back to 1885 as the Michigan School of Mines established by the state of Michigan to train mining engineers to operate the local copper mines. In 1964, it expanded its academic programmes and reached the status of a University. The University has five schools of excellence and now offers more than 120-degree programs and 55 percent of all enrolment being in engineering. The university now has a student population of about 5,700 undergraduates and 920 postgraduates, an endowment or funds amounting to $67.8 Million and had a research expenditures exceeded $44 million in 2006.

Michigan Tech is known for its academic excellence in engineering, science, computing, business, technology, environmental studies, and communication. The average overall ACT score for incoming students is 25.2, compared to 21.1 nationally. Undergraduate enrolment in environmental, geological, and mechanical engineering all rank in the top eight nationally, and the scientific and technical communication program is one the nation’s largest.

Michigan Tech University has also developed an innovative enterprise program, which fosters engineering skills by allowing students to work in business-like environments on real-world projects while completing their education. Different enterprises include Hybrid Transportation, Aerospace, Blue Marble Security, Husky Game Development, Integrated Microsystems, and Wireless Communications Enterprises

The university has recently focused on achieving a more diverse student body, in terms of ethnicity, gender, and areas of study in particular the attraction of international students. It offers an impressive international programme and services to international students to ensure that they can settle down in their new environment. A key step in this effort was the recent introduction of several new academic majors, including psychology, biochemistry and molecular biology, sound design, cheminformatics, communication and culture studies, pharmaceutical chemistry, exercise science, and theatre and entertainment technology. In addition, students have the opportunity of reading for a major and a minor degree at the same time in different subjects.

Michigan Tech offers its students the opportunity to gain knowledge, mentoring, scholarships, and research perspective from a faculty with prominent worldwide connections, which cares about its students, and helps them to succeed in their academic endeavour. Furthermore, all students including international students could obtain a number of scholarships, which would drastically reduce the cost of studies.

International students and parents should therefore note that, because of the possible scholarships as well as the work and study programmes the overall cost of studying at Michigan Tech is minimal, also that according to the US News and World Report, Michigan Tech graduates leave the campus with some of the lowest debt in the nation.
